Senior Pictures in Rochester NY: Aurora, Class of 2024

Brighton High School Senior, Aurora, was so much fun to work with. She loves to be outside, and she loves to sing and dance. Put the two together, and you have a really fun senior portrait session.

We used her grandmother’s backyard garden as the setting for her Senior pictures. There was no shortage of laughter and 50,000 watt smiles.

Congratulations to this amazing Class of 2024 grad!

Candid Mini Sessions: Family Pictures at Webster Arboretum

There are so many perfect little nooks and crannies at the Webster Arboretum for family pictures. It’s hard for me to pick my favorite spot!

Our summer family mini sessions were full of silly faces and giggles - and that was just from us, the family photographers. The families that joined us for their family portraits were also full of silliness and laughs, but also snuggles and hugs.

The kids loved playing hide and seek in the willow trees, and climbing up on the rocks throughout the park. The parents loved getting an updated family picture AND simultaneously letting their kiddos run off some energy at the same time. Win-win for everyone!

Family Pictures with the Whole Family: Brighton NY Family Portraits

I have photographed every single person in this set of family pictures on more than one occasion. Whether at a wedding, newborn session or previous family portrait.

And on a lot of those occasions, we’ve had to adapt to whatever the changing conditions might be. Family pictures in the fall are beautiful. However, the weather is always unpredictable. For this family portrait, the rainy fall weather had us scrambling to find location options that would work for a family 9.

We settled on an in home family portrait, with the possibility of stepping outside in between rain showers if we could. Even the littlest was able to roll with the changes as we kept an eye on the conditions outside.

Despite the ever changing plans, I’d say that the smiles in these family pictures turned out perfectly.

3 Reasons Why Spring is the Best Time of Year for Family Pictures: Rochester NY Photographers

Spring is our favorite time of year. The temperatures rise, the colors burst everywhere and the sun comes out of it’s winter hibernation in Rochester NY. It’s easy to see why our Candid Mini Sessions in Highland Park are always one of our most popular family mini sessions.

Here’s why we think that spring family pictures in Rochester NY are the best:

1. The weather is ideal

(Mostly. We do live in Rochester after all.)

During spring, the weather is mild and comfortable, not too hot or too cold. The sun is shining, and the natural light is perfect for capturing beautiful family pictures. You don't have to worry about the heat, and humidity of summer or the gray skies of a Rochester NY winter.

2. The world is gorgeous

Spring is the season of renewal, and nature is alive with vibrant colors. The trees and flowers are blooming, and the grass is green and lush. This creates the perfect backdrop for your family pictures, especially at Highland Park. The bursting color will make your family pictures pop.

3. It's a time for family gatherings

Spring is a time for family gatherings like Easter and Mother's Day. This makes it the perfect time to take family pictures. You can capture memories with extended family members or simply take pictures with your immediate family. It's a great way to create lasting memories.

So what’s your favorite season for family pictures? I hope it’s Spring… c’mon say it’s Spring… you know you want to!

Personal Brand Photography for Architectural Interior Designer

Last time we worked with Trudi Smith Designs, the space we were working with only had plywood walls. She had tasked us with photographing branding portraits of her working in the space, while it was still under construction. Her goal, was to show herself as a capable architectural designer from start to finish.

Check out the blog post and her space “before” here.

So the second part of her personal branding photography session was all about the end results. We added details, and all of the final touches that went into her show room to her collection of brand photographs, along with updated portrait images for her website and beyond.

The result of her office transformation is STUNNING, to say the least. Thank you, Trudi, for welcoming us with fun and laughter throughout your personal branding portrait sessions!

PS - can you spot the photographer in the pictures below? You’ll find she’s one of your best clients at every branding session we offer!

Family Pictures in March: Candid Mini Sessions in Victor NY

March in the Rochester NY area is what we call “Mud Season.” But it’s also the time of year for Maple EVERYTHING, which makes March awesome.

The idea for “pancakes and pictures” as a Candid Mini Session was born out of necessity during the pandemic. That first portrait session event was of a tailgating variety, but has evolved now that the barn at Kettle Ridge Farm has opened for dining.

First, you eat the pancakes, and spend time with your family. Then after everyone’s bellies are full, we take a few fun family pictures!

This year it was a touch cold and rainy, but we did it anyway. We even got away with asking the kids to jump in the puddles - because believe it or not, those playful family photographs are priceless as your children grow.

We’re thankful for our families who brave the weather, and are willing to hang with us, even if we get a little wet.

Branding Photography for Engineers: Rochester NY Photographers

Kelly is a engineering consultant in Rochester NY, whose specialty is helping businesses eliminate injury and waste from static electricity.

He reached out to us in need of some personal brand photography for an upcoming magazine article he was being featured in. It was a fun and different opportunity for us to photograph!

As as a branding photographer, I know absolutely nothing about electrostatic engineering. However, I do know he made the job look great in his branding portraits!

What to Wear in Your Family Pictures: Tips from Fairport NY Photographers

One of the most asked questions about our family portrait sessions we receive is: “What should we wear?” So we thought we’d answer it once and for all, right here on the blog.

Here are some tips on what to wear for family pictures:

  • Choose neutral colors. Neutral colors like navy, black, brown, and gray are always a safe bet for family photos. They're flattering on everyone and they won't clash with the background.

  • Add pops of color. If you want to add a little bit of personality to your outfits, you can do so by adding pops of color. This could be a bright scarf, a patterned shirt, or a pair of colorful shoes. Just be sure to keep the pops of color small so that they don't overpower the rest of your outfit.

  • Consider the season. When choosing outfits for family photos, it's important to consider the season. For example, if you're having your photos taken in the summer, you'll want to choose light, airy fabrics. If you're having your photos taken outside in the winter, you'll want to choose warmer fabrics or plan out coordinating jackets.

  • Coordinate your outfits. You don't have to wear matching outfits for family photos, but it's a good idea to coordinate your outfits so that they look cohesive. This could mean choosing outfits in the same color scheme or choosing outfits with similar patterns.

  • Be comfortable. The most important thing is to be comfortable in your clothes. If you're not comfortable, it will show in your photos. So choose outfits that you feel good in and that you'll be able to move around in easily.

No matter what color scheme you choose, make sure that the colors flatter everyone in your family.

Here are some additional color schemes to consider for your family portrait session:

  • Earth tones: This color scheme is perfect for fall or winter photos. It's made up of warm colors like brown, tan, and rust.

  • Pastels: This color scheme is perfect for spring or summer photos. It's made up of soft, light colors like pink, blue, and yellow.

  • Monochromatic: This color scheme is all about using one color in different shades. It's a great way to create a cohesive look for your family photos.

  • Complementary colors: This color scheme is made up of colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. It's a great way to create a striking look for your family photos.

Most importantly, have fun with it! Family portraits are a time to celebrate your relationships, so make sure you enjoy the process of choosing outfits AND getting your family pictures taken.
