Capturing an Extended Family Portrait at Genesee Valley Club

In June, I donated a family portrait session to Lucas's school staff appreciation luncheon, and a wonderful family received the gift! We met at the stunning Genesee Valley Club in Rochester, NY, where I had the pleasure of capturing their love and connection in timeless portraits. This session felt extra special, as it was a way to give back to a school community that has played a huge role in Lucas's growth as he prepares to leave elementary school.

Together for Family Pictures at the Holidays: Fairport NY Family Photographers

The last time this group updated their family portrait was in 2013. It was at a wedding, so the family picture was to be expected.

The rented AirBnB became the setting for an extended family portrait session. It was a surprise for many of the family members who were all coming from various parts of North America.

These family portraits included a lot of laughing, as well as both sweet and silly moments. Scroll down to the last image and you’ll find a photograph of everyone diving into an apple pie. This was planned as a tribute to their Grandmother - who sadly passed not too long ago.

It was her special recipe that was used to bake the pie. It was such a beautiful way to honor and include a cherished loved one in your family pictures.

Their joy was contagious, and their family pictures reflected every ounce of it. It was an honor to photograph this extended family session for them.

Candid Mini Sessions: Apple picking and family pictures in Rochester NY

Apple Farms are just a fantastic backdrop for Family Portrait shenanigans. It’s a delightful combination that appeals to people for a variety of reasons.

Here’s just 2 of our favorite reasons why we think that apple picking and family pictures go together like peanut butter and jelly.

1. Creating Cherished Memories: Apple picking creates lasting memories with the family. And at the same time, orchards offer beautiful surroundings for peaceful and happy pictures. Picking apples becomes an family outing filled with laughter and finding the best ones. Family pictures, and especially our Candid Mini Sessions, capture these happy moments to be enjoyed in the future, bringing back joyful feelings and cherished memories.

2. Celebrating Traditions: Apple picking is a beloved tradition for families, marking the start of fall. It brings generations together for this timeless activity, capturing the family bond with autumn pictures. These photos preserve cherished customs, adding importance to the apple picking tradition each year.

Yes, folks, apple orchards in the Rochester area have become the go-to location for family pictures, and for good reason. The vibrant colors, the rustic charm, and the sheer abundance of photogenic props make these orchards fun for everyone. But the real magic lies in the way these orchards transform into makeshift playgrounds for families, providing the perfect backdrop for Fall family pictures in Rochester - capturing all of our moments of joy, silliness, and sometimes downright chaos.

Family Pictures for Train Lovers in Fairport NY

Do you have a train loving family, or train loving toddler? Then Fairport Junction (and the village of Fairport) might be the perfect setting for your next family portrait.

A love of all things “trains” runs deep in this family. So when we were planning their annual family portrait this year, I didn’t think “flowers and nature.” I thought of the train car at Fairport Junction.

There was also a visit to the Lift Bridge and a race to the crossing when a train announced it was rolling through the village. We got our steps in that night for sure! But this little cutie and her family are worth putting on my racing shoes on a hot summer night.

Fall Family Portraits at Wickham Farms: Fairport NY Photographers

When families come back to us time and time again for their family pictures, it makes our hearts happy.

With this family, we’ve done it all. Wedding, Newborn, Holiday - you name it, we’ve captured their family pictures in many, many ways.

This time around, we took their family photos in Fairport, right before Halloween. So we took advantage of a gorgeous fall evening and went to Wickham Farms together. There, we photographed them in their adorable Halloween costumes, in the pumpkins and then had some time for candid family pictures, while they played.

This kid’s smile is contagious, amirght?

Eastman Museum Family Pictures: Rochester NY Photographers

We know we’ve said it before, but it’s worth mentioning again. We LIVE for Spring.

Now that there’s a grandchild in the mix, this family was ready to come together and update their family picture. Eastman Museum was the perfect setting for this family portrait session.

The daffodils and flowering trees, alongside the architecture of the mansion created a beautiful backdrop for a wall worthy family portrait.

The garden and the buildings also gave their newly minted one year old easy spaces to climb and explore.

So if you come to us with a desire for family pictures in the Spring - we’re here for it.

Beach Mini Sessions in Rochester NY: Fairport NY Photographers

Family pictures at the beach should always be this perfect.

Though for about an hour before them, it was pourinnnnng. We nervously watched the radar and hoped that we wouldn’t have to reschedule this candid mini session. Thankfully, the skies cleared and the light ended up being absolutely perfect.

We played on the boardwalk, in the sand, in the water and at Abbotts with this group of families. When it was all over, we were damp from going in the lake, full of sand and had full bellies from ice cream. But these family pictures were worth every grain of sand.

The pictures below were from our 2022 Candid Mini Session at the beach. This summer’s are happening in August! Want to join us?

Rochester NY Family Pictures: Highland Park Mini Sessions

In the first few family pictures below, you can see everything you need to know about a Candid Mini Session Event. Highland Park in May during peak Lilac season was the perfect setting for this particular event.

The first family portrait is a shot we set up. We picked the angle, the back lighting, and even asked them for a little bit of the action you see. The result - an all smiles, golden hour family picture.

The family picture below that is far more candid in nature. We let them be, and allowed them to play on the playground together. The result - joy in a real moment as a family.

Real life doesn’t happen in posed pictures alone. That perfect blend of both types of family pictures is exactly what we aim for at every single Candid Mini Session.

Family Pictures at the Lamberton Conservatory: Rochester NY Photographers

Warning: The cuteness level is high in these family pictures. There’s a dash of adorable and a sprinkle of love too.

The request was for family pictures that included Laura’s parents and grandma. So we visited the Lamberton Conservatory and used as many of the various climates as we could in one family portrait session. We captured a variety of family combinations, including one of three year old AJ and his great grandmother, “Mega.”

That particular image might be one of my favorite family pictures of all time. The look of absolute joy on both of their faces caught in that moment is perfection.
